Penn Appétit’s new website is grounded by the principle of utility. Designed with a focus to be useful and resourceful for all visitors, the new website displays a wide breadth of content in uniquely tailored ways. Each section is custom-designed, inspired by leading food periodicals and recipe guides to deliver a more professional and authentic appearance.
Penn Appétit is the University of Pennsylvania’s premier and only food magazine, and the first student-run periodical of its kind in the country. The magazine celebrates everything in food culture, exposing its readers to innovative recipes and must-see restaurants in the surrounding area. The print edition of the magazine is released on a semiannual schedule, and an online counterpart was launched to engage with readers on a more regular basis.
Working with Penn Appétit and their objective to become more useful to both the University of Pennsylvania and the greater Philadelphia communities, I developed a completely new, custom-built WordPress solution for their online magazine. The new edition moves away from traditional WordPress theme setups and is designed to communicate a wide breadth of content in a specially tailored way. It adopts the magazine’s print-based brand identity and is also designed to today’s standards, giving the website a sense of authenticity and professionalism. Additionally, the site also prepares the magazine to better integrate its print-based content onto its digital platform, and to maintain engagement with readers through its social channels.
